MIDDLEBURY — A 21-year-old Salisbury man is facing a slew of charges after he allegedly eluded police, and at one point backed into a state police cruiser.

Police say Alexander Sheldrick is facing charges of Grossly Negligent Operation, Eluding a Police Officer, Reckless Endangerment, and Unlawful Mischief.

On Saturday at around 10:30 p.m., police say they attempted to stop a Ford Focus on US Route 7 in Middlebury.

After the trooper activated her blue lights and siren, the vehicle allegedly sped up and failed to stop.

The vehicle turned into a local business and attempted to evade police.

Police say the Ford continued driving through several fields where it ultimately became stuck and the operator fled on foot.

During this incident, the operator attempted to turn the vehicle around and while doing so, backed into a fully marked State Police cruiser.

Police say the crash caused significant contact damage to the driver’s side of the cruiser.

Police later located the driver and identified him as Alexander Sheldrick.

He was placed under arrest and transported to the New Haven barracks for processing.
