NEWBURY — A pig was put down by police in Newbury this morning after it was seen wandering around I-91.

At around 11:00 a.m. police responded to numerous reports of a pig on the interstate.

The pig was located and traveled into the triangular grass area between I-91 south, Exit 17 off-ramp, and US Route 302.

The pig was estimated to be between 500 and 600 pounds.

Troopers say the pig was traveling back toward I-91 and was a danger to motorists.

They decided to put the animal down.

The owner of the pig arrived a short time later and opted to donate the meat.

The pig was donated to the butcher who processes meat for the local game supper in Bradford.
